Chapter 7: The Marriage Contract That Became Forever
The Marriage Contract That Became Forever by Anurag Maurya
The final weeks of the contract flew by like sand through an hourglass. The penthouse had changed completely. It was now filled with laughter, the smell of fresh food, and the warmth of two people who had found solace in each other. Yet, the shadow of the contract hung over them.
On the final morning, the termination papers were sitting on the study table. Lily stood in the kitchen, holding her coffee cup. Her bags were packed, sitting by the door. She felt a deep, aching pain in her chest. She had fallen deeply in love with Julian, but she was terrified that he only saw her as a business transaction.
Julian walked in, his eyes red, as if he hadn't slept. He looked at her bags, and his face hardened.
"You are ready to leave," he said, his voice flat.
"The year is up, Julian," Lily said softly, her voice trembling. "I... I saved my house. You kept your company. Our transaction is complete."
Julian stared at her. The silence in the kitchen was deafening.
"Is that all this was to you?" Julian asked, his voice suddenly cracked with emotion. "A transaction?"
"You told me not to expect you to fall in love with me," Lily cried, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes. "I was trying to respect your rules!"
Julian took a step forward, grabbing her hands. His hands were shaking. "To hell with the rules, Lily! I was terrified. I have spent my whole life building walls because everyone I loved left me. But you... you brought warmth back into my life. You taught me how to feel. I don't want my freedom. I want you."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out two documents. He set them on the counter. The first was the deed to her grandmother's cottage—fully paid off, under her name. The second was a marriage license.
"This is not a contract," Julian whispered, his eyes shining with tears. "There is no expiration date. I don't want a year, Lily. I want forever. I want to cook with you, watch movies under the same blanket, and make coffee for you every single morning. I love you."
Lily stared at the papers, then up at his face. The cold, intimidating CEO was gone, replaced by the gentle, protective man she had fallen in love with.
"You love me?" she breathed.
"With everything I have," Julian said.
Lily dropped her coffee cup onto the counter, not caring as it spilled. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "I love you too, Julian. I don't want to leave."
Julian let out a ragged breath, pulling her body tight against his. He lifted her up, spinning her around in the sunlit kitchen, a beautiful, genuine laugh escaping his lips. He set her down gently, cupping her face. He pressed a warm kiss to her forehead, then to her cheeks, and finally, he leaned down and captured her lips.
The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with a year's worth of unspoken longing. It was a promise of forever.
As he pulled back, his hand slid into his drawer and pulled out the original contract. With a smile, he tore it into a dozen pieces, letting them flutter to the floor like snow.
"The contract is over," Julian whispered against her lips. "Our forever starts today."
Lily smiled, holding his hand tightly. "Forever."
