The Outflow

Safe Harbor by Anurag

The arrival of the rescue ferry and the university supply boat marked the end of the storm season and the completion of Clara's research. The dock was bustling with deckhands, a stark contrast to the quiet sanctuary of the lighthouse. Clara packed her sensors, her data complete, her career-defining paper ready to be written. Yet, her heart felt heavy. Julian stood on the pier, hands shoved deep into his coat pockets, watching her assistants load the final crates. He looked out at the open water, returning to his role as the silent keeper.Clara walked away from her team, stopping right in front of him. "The data says the whales are returning," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "But I don't think I want to follow them back to the city." Julian looked down at her, the fierce protectiveness in his eyes replacing the old sorrow. He reached out, his rough hand cupping her cheek. "Then don't go. The lighthouse has plenty of room for an oceanographer." As the ferry blew its horn, signaling departure, Clara stepped into his embrace, realizing that after years of drifting through deep waters, she had finally found her shore.
