Chapter 1

The Girl Who Painted the Sky by Anurag Maurya

Elara lived in a world of monotone. Everything in her village of Oakhaven was a shade of grey, white, or charcoal. The sky was pale, the trees were colorless, and even the apples were dull grey. It hadn't always been this way, her grandfather claimed, but the "Dimming" happened when Elara was just a baby. On her 14th birthday, while cleaning the attic, Elara found a leather case hidden behind a loose brick. Inside was a paintbrush made of silver bristles and a small, sealed vial containing a thick, cobalt blue liquid. When she touched the brush, a strange warmth spread through her fingertips, different from the cold that held the rest of the world. She decided to test it on a withered fern in the corner, and as the brush touched the leaf, it turned a vibrant, lively green, instantly bringing warmth to the room.
